Synopsis

A 'warped attempt to wipe out female sin'.
That was how Frances Finnegan in her book 'Do Penance or Perish' published in 2001 described the Magdalene Institutions in Ireland.
And in this 'warped attempt', were the Magdalene Institutions a refuge, a reform, or a punishment?
It is not the job of the historian to finger-point, blame or accuse. The job of the historian is to explain the why, the how and the wherefore. In this case, the why, the how and the wherefore of the Magdalene Institutions in Ireland in the 20th century.
Yes! We all need to ask questions! Questions like, - how many women were incarcerated within the various Magdalene institutions in Ireland after 1922? Who were these women? What brought them there? Where did they come from? How long did they stay? What were conditions like for them? Did they ever leave, and if so where are they now? And how many lived and died within those convent walls?
And further questions like, - how could this have happened in 'Holy Ireland'? How could this have been allowed to happen in the 'Isle of saints and scholars'? In Ireland of the 'hundred thousand welcomes'? How could this have continued here in Ireland right up until 1996 when the last of these institutions finally closed its doors, and long after those in other countries had closed theirs?
And why is it so important for these women's stories to be got out there into the public domain, and kept out there in the public domain?
This book gives the answers!
