In the town of Name Pending, Wyoming, Elijah Potbury does brisk business as the territory's only practicing necromancer. For a reasonable fee, he'll raise any friend or family member.
Stories contained in this fourth volume:
"The Ravenous Man-Eater":
Mr. Seven, owner of the airship Azincourt, assigns Professor Hemplewick the task of creating a many-tentacled, armor-plated monstrosity in the form of a giant slug to work in the engine room of the Azincourt. A reanimated human brain from a freshly deceased corpse is needed to power the creature, for which Seven turns to Potbury. Aware of Potbury's inconvenient, as Seven sees it, adherence to a professional code of ethics, the airship owner is compelled to lie about what the reanimated brain will really be used for. When things go horribly wrong and the deadly monster begins devouring crewmen, the necromancer is called upon to find a way to incapacitate the creature without killing it.
"The Tavanier Purple":
A wealthy industrialist commissions Col. Biff B. Natron and forty-five men to protect a valuable diamond known as the Tavanier Purple scheduled to be transported by Pullman from Baltimore to Sacramento. No less than the infamous Harry Blackstone, master of illusion and mysticism, has vowed to steal the diamond. After several attacks and the loss of almost half the defenders, the train stops near the town of Name Pending. There, Potbury is persuaded to reanimate twenty of the slain defenders with the idea that Blackstone will not be able to kill what is not alive. But there are other ways to outwit the defenders of the Tavanier Purple, including the use of an unknown traitor in their midst.
"Resurrected Titans":
The Cheyenne want Potbury to resurrect a legendary warrior named Thunder Foot who is said to have the strength of twenty men. The military from a nearby fort fear that Thunder Foot will unite the various disaffected tribes under the buffalo-head banner and go on the warpath. To oppose Thunder Foot, the military commission Potbury to raise their own champion, Zachary Sachs. Thunder Foot and Sachs meet at a location overlooking Longfall Canyon in a clash of resurrected titans.
"Through the Attic Looking-Glass":
Miss Abigail's reanimated sister has been acting strangely of late. It's been hard to keep her away from the old looking-glass in the attic. After looking into the matter, Potbury discovers that the mirror is a portal to another world in which the physical laws are radically different.
