Steve is in trouble. It is 2024 and he is in the hands of a criminal justice system on the edge of collapse, yet officially in denial of the crisis. Steve expects to be offered the appropriate support and encouragement, as is the supposed status of all convicted of a criminal offence – but the reality he finds is very different.
This is a fictionalised account based on a number of individuals on both sides of the divide who have been kind enough to talk about their experiences. Unless they have come across the UK criminal justice system themselves, or alongside a family member, the majority of people have little or no idea about what goes on when the closed doors of the prison open. Whilst a work of fiction, this novel peers behind the media silence that is normally broken only by a howl of rage – the daily despair goes unacknowledged.
