Synopsis

Lithuania, 1871. A family flee a pogrom with a precious trinket.
3rd August 1914. 16 year old Arthur Walton from Loughborough, sees the peculiar item the day before he enlists.
April 1919. War weary Britain still has men fighting in the frozen North of Russia. Sent by the Minister for War, Winston Churchill in 1918 to protect supplies after the 1917 Russian Revolution. In danger of men being stranded and kit captured by the Bolsheviks, a relief force is needed.
After 4 years of war, Arthur and two friends cannot settle into the 'Land fit for Hero's'.
They and many others respond to Churchill's call for volunteers. They join the North Russian Relief Force and are sent to Archangel. Mission creep takes them inland along the North Dvina River. A mutiny, Bolshevik captivity and an indebted Political Commissar lead them further from the Allied forces in the North. The cross-country Trans-Siberian Railway, controlled by The Czech Legion, crammed with military and civilian refugees is the only route out.
With the help of a multilingual English governess, and after many months presumed dead they arrive back in Britain, to be gaoled in Liverpool as suspected revolutionaries.
Not for the first time, Churchill's military and political ideas leave a lot to answer for.
