Synopsis

In the year 1848 England was very nearly plunged into civil war. Old systems were creaking under the strain imposed by the great increase in population and alterations in their way of life. Riots and bloodshed were frequent and a vast number of people who called themselves Chartists marched on London to secure redress for their grievances.

Whilst the Duke of Wellington was disposing his forces to meet this threat to the capital, in Mytholmroyd the villagers were marching in procession with band and banners to the dedication of their new Parish Church. When the site for the new Parish Church was discussed, doubtless many alternatives were considered, but the final choice resulted in the Church becoming the centre of the village which grew around it, thus becoming by geographical situation the hub of the village and the most prominent feature of the valley, easily visible from most parts of the surrounding hillsides.

The situation of the church is indeed magnificent. Even today when housing and industry have done so much to mar the beauty of former years, the sight of the grey stone of hillside farm, village and church, touched with warm colour by the sinking sun and the sound of the Church bells echoed by the surrounding heights is a memory which none who have seen and heard can easily forget.

Earlier booklets have described the building in 1908, 1948, 1988 and 1998. Visitors cannot fail to be impressed by the unique, colourful mosaics which surround the chancel and which are described in detail along with the stained glass windows and woodcarvings.

This latest book, written by Eric Alston, church warden, on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of its consecration, describes the great changes which have taken place in the church and in the way it has grown to be the centre of the village, both spiritually and socially.
