Excerpt: He got up and took it down off the shelf. It looked like a diary; handwritten and very old. At first Dad thought it might be private and decided to leave it alone, but when he flipped the book to the first page, he noticed that someone had written a title there. It was in pencil, as if a child had written it. It simply said “Edalb.”

If you have ever wandered… that is really wandered, you may have found yourself in a place so new and different from where you have started that you cannot find your way back. Most woodland creatures develop a sense of smell that enables them to return from whence they came. At the end of the day, they simply turn around, recall their own scent, and follow their own footprints home. It is true for most dwellers of the woods, but sadly not true for all. Some need a guide, a compass if you will. And what if the compass were lost…
