Synopsis

What happens when a betrayal scars your life? How do you recover? Do you seek justice or just revenge?
The story begins in 1936. Emily Edelman is 19 when she leaves England to join the International Brigades fighting for the fledgling ill-fated Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War.
She falls in love in Barcelona during the war but experiences a traumatic incident at the battle of Brunete. She has to come home and so loses touch with her love, and later searches desperately.
At the international exhibition in Paris, on the way home, she is given two flags sewn together, as a gift to commemorate her time helping the republic. Years later, in 2016 this gift proves to a catalyst for a Spanish far right group as they seek the secret hidden between the flags to help with their propaganda to destabilise the upcoming Catalan independence referendum.
In 1976 Emily and her friend Xavi, a former Basque child refugee from the civil war, who she has looked after, return to Paris where, unbeknown to Xavi, Emily extracts revenge on the man who betrayed her.
Emily realises that for the rest of her life she must guard the secret of the flags and the secret of her revenge or else everything could spin out of control and take her family down a vey dangerous path. She does this successfully for many decades until her death in 2016 when her secrets are finally uncovered and it is now up to Xavi and her granddaughter Ana to help the family to survive the turmoil which the secrets have unleashed.
