Synopsis

The aim of this book is to make the Truculentus of Plautus (d. 185 BCE) accessible to intermediate students of ancient Latin. The running vocabulary and grammatical commentary are meant to provide everything necessary to read each page so that readers can progress through the text, improving their knowledge of Latin while enjoying a fun example of ancient comedy. The Truculentus is a great text for intermediate readers. The sentence structure and syntax are straightforward and vocabulary is repeated frequently throughout the play. Plautus’ Latin is archaic with a few minor variations on classical Latin, but these cause only minor problems at first. His Latin is also conversa- tional and thus provides a good balance to the more formal language of Virgil and other canonical authors.
