Synopsis

Jack Jelinski does not write the kinds of poems that are about one’s introverted, tormented afflictions experienced as they search for their identity. Nor do his poems reflect the sort of intellectual pretense that make them unintelligible to the common person. This is the kind of writing that makes people say that they hate poetry.

Readers of Jack’s poems will have no such reaction. This is because his poems speak to their own experience in the world. In fact, readers will most likely find a few of his poems so compelling that they will cherish them for the rest of their lives and share them with friends.

Jack’s poetry derives from a long and interesting life from blue collar laborer to university professor. After his mother died, he lived on his grandparents’ subsistence farm (wood stove, outhouse, pitcher pump in the pantry, kerosene lanterns). He was adopted at an early age, dug ditches and wrestled cast-iron pipe as a laborer/apprentice plumber before experiencing a brief stint as a college football player. He joined the Peace Corps in 1962 and was trained as a well-driller. Before returning to the States, he worked as a life guard on various islands in the Caribbean. Once returned, he completed his education and became a university professor. He has been a lifelong outdoorsman and writer of poetry.

Now in his eighties, he has decided to publish this book about savoring life’s delights while facing the challenges of aging and the difficult circumstances of the contemporary world.
