Synopsis

Bates Wilson: The Force Behind Canyonlands National Park and a Legacy of Wild Preservation.

Bates Wilson was a trailblazing figure who shaped the wilderness of the American Southwest, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape and the people who knew him. From humble beginnings, Bates rose to become one of the most respected leaders in the National Park Service, without ever earning a high school diploma. His passionate advocacy for Canyonlands National Park ensured the preservation of iconic natural treasures like the Needles, the Maze, and Island in the Sky. A master of diplomacy, Bates built strong friendships with influential figures such as Edward Abbey and Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, who supported his vision of wild preservation. Known for his hospitality and unforgettable Dutch oven cooking, anyone who shared a meal with Bates came to appreciate the rugged beauty of Canyon Country and counted themselves as his friend.

This is the remarkable story of the man who fought to protect the heart of Canyonlands and became its unofficial guardian—a cowboy with a diplomat’s touch who changed the face of conservation in America.
