Published in 1854, Early Engagements is the debut novel of Illinois’s first female novelist, Sarah Marshall Hayden.
Written as a “warning” to Hayden’s teenage nieces, the novel (and sequel novella, Florence) follows the emotional ups and downs of the young, wealthy, and spoiled Florence Delisle, who finds herself betrothed at an early age, though her maturing heart longs for someone else. Determined to please those around her, even at the cost of her own happiness, the novel details the subsequent carnage that consumes Florence’s life before again finding happiness.
With a keen eye for detail, Hayden (herself a sort of Frontier Aristocrat) has left us a novel that combines her love of Romantic poetry with the Antebellum Christian morality of the upper classes to create an overall narrative that is as compelling as it is critical of the world it depicts.
Reformatted and annotated for modern readers, this edition includes an Appendix featuring selections from the poets and essayists referenced by Hayden in her own writing.
