On the 120th Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War why yet another Memoir? Because this is a story that reads like a novel but tells a much wider story than the horrifying but well known tales of the trenches. It’s a story that takes Percy Cecil Mason (known throughout his life asTubby) through 18 months of frustration and boredom in southern England and Ireland before he finally reaches France and the real war.
Nor is he an officer — just a lowly infantry man. After France he was to spend the next many months in wild parts of Salonika where the bugs were more lethal than the bullets. Those that survived then faced the desert in Egypt, walking step after tortuous step, almost all the way from Alexandria to Beersheba, and on to Gaza.
He then faced the perils of warfare in Palestine as he and the rest of the London Regiment tramped to Jerusalem pushing the Turks before them. 647 years after the Crusades this motley band of Territorials wrested the Holy City from the Ottoman Turks. After that it was down from Jerusalem to Jericho and the Jordan Valley, across the river and up the Moabite hills on the other side. Finally, a return to France and a last fight along the Messines Ridge.
Tubby's daughter had been writing down the stories her father told her, over many years. Now, after much reading and research and, with her father's voice ringing in her ears, she has produced this unique, authentic and lively account of a hero’s journey.
