On 14 February 2012, the Scottish company ― The Rangers Football Club plc ― and parent company to Rangers Football Club was placed in Administration. The principal activity of the company was the operation of a professional football club.

Considering its history ― and most significant football pedigree ― one must wonder what happened when on Sunday 29 July 2012 this football club played Brechin City Football Club (FC) in the Ramsdens Challenge Cup and on 11 August 2012 played Peterhead FC in its first competitive match in the then Scottish Football League (SFL) Third Division. Arguably, this was the lowest point in the club’s history at that time.

The ’Rangers story’ affected many people in, and beyond, football and Scotland. From both an academic, practitioner and lay perspective, this was ― and continues to be ― a story of our time that demands objective and critical analysis.

The purpose of this book is to attempt to explain the complexity of this story. It does not seek to judge or blame or to make recommendations but endeavors to offer an academic explanation to this complexity. It also hopes to explain the recovery of Rangers FC, and its parent companies, from 29 July 2012 to 6 March 2015 ― the date of the so-called ‘regime change.’ Simply, it is a story of how ‘corporate Rangers’ (i.e. the companies that operated Rangers FC) contributed to a descent into chaos, how a resultant chaos ensued and the subsequent recovery from this most chaotic period in the history of Rangers FC.
