Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson by Mary Rowlandson is an Autobiography about her time as a captive that was first published in the US in 1682.

Sneak Peak:

“It is a solemn sight to see so many Christians lying in their blood, some here, and some there, like a company of sheep torn by wolves, all of them stripped naked by a company of hell-hounds, roaring, singing, ranting, and insulting, as if they would have torn our very hearts out; yet the Lord by His almighty power preserved a number of us from death, for there were twenty-four of us taken alive and carried captive.”

Summary:

During King Philip's War in February 1676, the frontier village of Lancaster, Massachusetts, was attacked and completely destroyed by a party of Nipmuck Indians. As help arrived in Concord, the attackers withdrew, taking 24 captives with them, including Mrs. Mary Rowlandson and her three children.

For nearly three months, the small family was forced to live with their captors and endure the harsh winter weather of New England. The youngest child, who had been injured during the attack, died as a result of his injuries. The ransom was eventually paid, and the family was released.

In 1682, Mrs. Rowlandson's account of her experience was published. It was a "best-seller" at the time and gave birth to a new literary genre, the captivity narrative. Such accounts contributed to the long-standing mistrust and hatred of the Indians. It is also the first English book published in the New World by a woman.
