Synopsis

There are inevitable events that one comes across which humbles them, leading to a search of questions and reflections on the self.

In my case I stumbled across mention of a mountain in Greece that is home to twenty monasteries filled with Christian Orthodox monks, Mount Athos. A draw to the history of this mountain, paired with my curiosity to ask a few questions to these monks, prompted me to take the step of taking a solo trip from Canada to this sacred mountain.

As part of my preparation, I did extensive research on the different monasteries I would stay at, and would run these ideas by a friend of mine who had been to this mountain before. He would laugh and tell me that I could make all the plans I want, but that once I set foot on the mountain, things would be governed differently. At the time I did not really understand – but I would soon learn just what he meant.

This book captures my four transformative days on this mountain, and brings to light the very words that my friend spoke. The sequence of events, coincidences, and ironies has left me thinking about my trip every single day even several months after my visit has passed. I hope you enjoy reading about this journey, as I outline in detail my very first visit to Mount Athos, in June 2022.
