Synopsis

The year is 1900, John and Luther Turner (both born on the same day back in 1878, on the same hour, on the same Savannah, Georgia plantation, in different homes) are celebrating John’s returning home from Harvard University, at age 22. John is white. Luther is black, ten minutes older than his master. They are about to be kicked off the plantation by John’s father, “The Judge”. He insists they travel west to California; to run as fast as they can, away from the upcoming Jim Crow laws, his court will be expected to uphold.

Equipped with a law degree, some cash, some home-made Savannah cigars, and his parent’s blessing, John takes Luther under his wing. They use the Transcontinental Railroad to make their four-day trip west.

Selling “Savannah Gold” labeled cigars and fresh cut California timber, John and Luther become self-made millionaires, in “The City of Gold”, where they help bring birth to the city-wide policy of interracial acceptance, to start the Twentieth Century. Those values get carried forward, inherited by future generations, with this author, along with most of his childhood friends being real-life residual recipients. Part of this story is based on the non-fiction “California Gold Rush Days” history of Oroville California, and part of it is fiction (mainly for character creation and development). You will be entertained, educated, and reader captivated.
