Synopsis

The Pierpoint Site is a large late prehistoric site (ca AD 1200–1400) located in southwestern Arizona, 15 km north (upriver) from the Town of Gila Bend. It extends 500 m north-to-south and more than 600 m east-to-west, with a total area of about 30 ha. The site is distinguished by two massive stone walls oriented north-to-south across the mouth of its canyon and contains about 200 cultural features, including, in addition to the two long walls, 143 rock rings, 31 cleared areas, 14 rock-shelters, and 32 other features.

Archaeologist David Doyel, having extensive experience in the area, served as project and field director, leading a dedicated cadre of members of the Agua Fria and other chapters of the Arizona Archaeological Society. Without the efforts of these “citizen archaeologists,” this long, laborious project would not have been completed.
