Synopsis

It’s 1898 and commercial hunters are shooting tens of thousands of migrating birds to supply feathers for fashionable women’s hats. Portland high school students Jeremy and Clara set out to document the slaughter in a series of newspaper articles for the Oregonian. Aided by their biology teacher—and a mysterious talking passenger pigeon named Avery—they journey to rookeries at Sauvie Island, Three Arch Rocks, and Malheur Refuge. When they try to save the last great white egrets at Malheur, in southeast Oregon, however, they come face to face with two ruthless brothers who have been killing people as well as birds.
