IntroductionA Literary Classic Masterpiece That Belongs on Every Bookshelf!Alexandre Dumas' work Twenty Years After was first published in 1845. It depicts events in France during the Fronde, during Louis XIV's youthful rule, and in England near the end of the English Civil War.
Sneak Peak“I sometimes wonder,” replied Athos, smiling at that gayety which recalled the good old days, “that we could form an association of men who would be, after twenty years of separation, still so closely bound together. Friendship throws out deep roots in honest hearts, D’Artagnan. Believe me, it is only the evil-minded who deny friendship; they cannot understand it. And Aramis?”
SummaryThe plot is as follows: A group of people believe D'Artagnan and Planchet are Frondeurs. Aramis leaps aboard a horse from a nearby tree where he had been hiding. Mazarin uses Porthos as bait to entice him into Mazarin's service. Athos confesses that Raoul is the son of a fortuitous meeting between Athos and Madame de Chevreuse. Guiche, Raoul, and Grigaud are looking for a monk who was engaged in Béthune's Milady de Winter's execution.
Mazarin sends d'Artagnan and Porthos to England to deliver a message to Cromwell. Athos and Aramis assist the young Louis XIV and Mazarin in departing from Paris. Unfortunately, all of their plans fail in the end, and Mordaunt resorts to regicide, executing Charles I himself.
