Synopsis

This manuscript marks the beginning of a seven-year period of introspection and prolific work for previously noted author, scientist, and radical activist, Ellen Adele Harper. For seven years, Ellen would peel away the layers of false identity to discover the truth of who she was. Along the way, she would produce a dozen manuscripts, including thousands of poems and essays, narratives, spiritual explorations, and experimental endeavors. In the end, she stripped herself down to the barest identity and found that while transcending gender, as a shaman and as a human being, she needed to express as female in this life. This transformation occurred in federal prison, where she was serving seven years for a victimless crime.

In March of 2015, the prison where she was housed had a norovirus epidemic. The inmates were locked down for one month as the illness raged through the prison population. While locked down, Ellen decided set aside the novel she was writing in order to compose a volume of poetry. By the time the lockdown ended four weeks later, she had a manuscript of 1,017 poems, titled Prison Psalms.
