This story revolves about two young men, both of them having lost their parents in some unfortunate accident when they were both only aged sixteen. Their parents had been quite successful business people and had left them quite a lot of money, investments and property. Since their parent's death the two had just 'stuck together' but at the time didn't know that they were related to one another.
From the age of sixteen, neither of them had had a 'steady job' or been employed as such. They both had skills that were of two different types. Peter was a first-class carpenter while Robert was interested in electronics and electrics. Peter respected the kind of work done by people such as Thomas Chippendale, Sheraton, Hepplewhite and others and held them as his 'old time heroes'.
One day, while they were talking together, Robert very rashly said that it was his belief that using modern technology to create a means of taking Peter back to see his old-time heroes. Peter didn't believe that such a thing was possible but Robert proved him wrong and over the next couple of months, Robert did manage, using electronics, to create a gadget that could permit a person to move about in time.
Peter did get back to meet Chippendale and Robert, who wasn't good at operating the thing that he had invented managed to meet and become involved with a beautiful young lady. The only problem with that was that he was twenty years older than she was. He decides that despite the enormous age gap, he wanted to marry her. He does eventually ask her father for permission to marry, but that may perhaps be in a later book!
Eventually, the two of them decide that they would like to meet their parents just one more time and taking the young lady with them they do go back to meet their parents at a time before they had their accident. The rest of the story is however, in the book that may be worth reading.
