Synopsis
Jerry and Lillian are a special pair of siblings. Due to a rare genetic mutation, they were both diagnosed with leukemia (AML) at a very young age (Jerry at three and Lillian at six). The cancer is aggressive and relentless, but they fought hard, never giving up hope. Between the two of them, there have been three bone marrow transplants, months of hospitalization, and countless sufferings.
Jerry and Lillian have quite different personalities: Jerry is intelligent, observing, and a little reserved. Lillian, on the other hand, is cheerful, spontaneous, and carefree. As a parent, it is heartbreaking to watch each of them fight cancer in their own resilient ways. At the same time, I feel extremely proud of them and of our family as a whole. To have a child diagnosed with cancer is a terrifying experience, to have two children with the same disease is simply beyond bearing. I don’t know how we have come this far, but I am certain we are still standing together as a family because of faith, hope and love, as is manifested in this collection of poems, drawings, and stories created by Jerry and Lillian. I hope their works can bring hope and strength to families struck with childhood cancer.
