Here presented is an annotated reprint of the 1915 book by highly respected and decorated Union officer, Joshua Chamberlain, who was a Colonel and a brevet brigadier general in the Union army. Nothing has been taken from the original copy, but a Preface and an Index have been added, many foot-notes, and a summary is given of each chapter. These additions make this book a differentiated work from any other reprint of this title. It is a differentiated text from anything that may be on the Internet because it is a print copy.
The Passing of the Armies covers the last skirmishes and battles resulting in the doom of the Confederate Army. General Ulysses S. Grant was unable to occupy Richmond or finish-off the Army of Northern Virginia in the Overland Campaign (May to June, 1864). Alternatively, he looked to the vital city of Petersburg. Petersburg is about twenty-four miles south from Richmond. At Petersburg, five railroads join, which supplied all of the upper James River area. If Grant could capture this significant transport center, he could then isolate Richmond, and make General Robert E. Lee have to evacuate Richmond or fight the numerically superior Grant on open ground. That was the plan. The author, Joshua Chamberlain was an eye-witness who participated in the historical events of which he so vividly writes.
