Synopsis

She's the best player in her tiny town. But that's the problem.

Keli Stennes lives in Falls City — population 800, one stoplight, one café where her mom works double shifts just so they can make it. Everybody knows her name. Everybody loves her. And everybody expects her to lead their school to a state championship. She has been the best player around her whole life. But this summer, a chance meeting leads Keli to a volleyball camp surrounded by hundreds of girls from schools she has never played against — and she gets hit with a truth she can't shake: best around here isn't the same as actually good.
That's where she meets Ashley Webb.

Ashley is the starting setter at Dallas High — the program that goes to the 5A state tournament every single year without fail. She has started since freshman year. She's beautiful, confident, and scary good. And for some reason she wants Keli on her team. The first time Ashley sets to her in a camp drill, Keli explodes off the floor and crushes a cross-court ball with real timing, real height, real everything — and something shifts in her that doesn't shift back. This is who she could become. This is the game she has been reaching for without knowing what it looked like.
Ashley spends the whole week hinting that Keli should transfer to Dallas. Keli shrugs it off, knowing there is no way it could ever happen. Her lifelong friends, Sticky the boy next door, the school, the town — nobody would understand or accept it. And it's just her and her mom. Her dad, the town hero of his day, passed away when Keli was young. Club volleyball was never an option. A transfer to Dallas sounds like a dream that belongs to somebody else's life.
But deep down, Keli is burning for the chance — knowing it may be her only one.

Ashley doesn't let it go. She comes out to Falls City, makes her case to Keli's mom and grandfather, and refuses to take no for an answer. And somewhere in all of it, Keli finds the courage to make the scariest decision of her life. When she finally tells everyone she is transferring to Dallas, her world turns upside down. Charlee — her best friend since kindergarten — explodes in front of everyone and says things that can't be unsaid. Sticky — the boy next door, her person since they were three years old — goes cold and turns his back. The whole town feels abandoned. People who cheered for her whole life are suddenly the ones talking about her behind her back... Except Ashley.

Ashley and Keli build the kind of friendship we all wish we had — honest, fierce, and forged inside the grind of big-time volleyball and everything that comes with it. They are going to need each other over the next two years in ways neither of them sees coming. What happens on the court, in the friendships lost, and in the player Keli becomes is the kind of story you will stay up too late reading — and think about long after you finish.
