Synopsis

Mr. Poliakoff is known by sight by people who frequent the excellent Belluno Restaurant in London. He dines there three times a week: week after week, month after month, year after year. Samuel Rozoff, Schmulik to his family and friends, survived World War Two as a small child. He grew up in the Jewish community in Samara in what was then the Soviet Union. He became involved with the Refusenik movement, resulting in his arrest and transportation to a Gulag, from which he escaped. Rozoff and Poliakoff’s lives crossed frequently over the years, even if they often did not know it.

Simon Majaro weaves this story within a lively history of the conflicts of the time before Poliakoff and Rozoff have a final, explosive meeting at the Belluno Restaurant.
