Synopsis

Castles in Kent

Do you love exploring old castles?

In recent years a new word has entered into the English language, as increasing numbers of people have begun to discover the joys of taking a “Staycation” rather than a foreign holiday.
There have been many books on castles, but this one is intended to be rather different. It is designed as a dynamic guide to help you tour and visit beautiful castles and stately homes, but it also mentions those mysterious forgotten places which lie hidden in deep woodlands, or have now been lost forever.

Discovering Castles

The British Isles enjoy a rich cultural heritage, including many magnificent castles, palaces and stately homes. The most famous of these beautiful sites host thousands of visitors every year, and yet, even in this age of information overload, some of the best attractions are largely undiscovered, tucked away down a country lane just a few miles off the main road. There is a real danger that we drive or cycle a considerable distance to visit one attraction, but miss out on three or four others in the local area. My aim, therefore, is to offer the reader more options and more information, so as to help visitors get more out of their precious holiday time.
The history of each castle is outlined together with notes on the architecture and construction, supported by maps and illustrations. There are tips on how to plan your tours, so as to take in as many places as possible, as well as advice on post codes and road numbers for navigation, and practical issues such as opening times and parking.

Live in a Castle

There are guides to those castles which offer holiday accommodation so that it is possible to spend a few romantic nights actually living as a guest in a castle.

Weddings in Castles

There is even a section for people who want to get married in a castle with a list of the glittering wedding venues available in each county.

Explore the whole area

How often have we visited one beautiful site, then later learned that we missed out on another which was just around the corner. This book does not limit itself to just the castles, but provides a helpful list of other tourist destinations in the local area, whether it be ancient churches, stately homes or even a safari park, so that the family can make the most of their stay.

My dearest wish, in publishing this book, is that when you explore these wonderful castles you will get the greatest possible enjoyment from your visit.
