A pretty gray cat is abandoned on a rainy day, afraid, alone, and getting wet. Day after day, night after night, she makes her way from house to house, dodging dangerous animals and unfriendly people until she sees an open doorway.
Twelve-year-old Clara's father died suddenly the year before and she misses him deeply. She chaffs at her mother's unwillingness to realize she isn't a little girl anymore, and is old enough to make at least some of her own decisions.
Terry, Clara's mother, is juggling two jobs and an unpredictable pre-teen, She has the same challenges many parents have these days: bills, money, and making ends meet.
When the cat suddenly appears on their doorstep it sends all of them on a journey that leads to surprises - especially when it's discovered she's pregnant! Clara names her GiGi and Terry reluctantly agrees to keep her, much to the delight of Molly, a cocker spaniel who adores this new addition to their family.
GiGi gives birth to three kittens, but one of them is half the size of the others! They name him Tadpole and Clara and Terry soon learn from their veterinarian, Dr. Sheila, that he will never grow up like a normal kitten. He is a dwarf, and faces an uncertain future. Despite his size, Tadpole is quite the hand full, stubborn and determined to be just like his brother and sister, Freckles and Sarah Jane.
Terry's worries about money are now worse, and Terry makes a terrible decision about Tadpole that puts him in danger. Are Terry's problems more important than Tadpole's safety? Will little Tadpole live?
His fight for survival makes all of them realize what is crucial, and what isn't, and the tiny kitten help both Clara and Terry realize what has been missing in their lives.
