Synopsis

In the Musaion of Alexandria, Psammethichus has earned a place among the scholars. Yet to many of his Greek colleagues he remains an Egyptian outsider, while some of his own people see him as a man who has abandoned their ways.

Then a street magician speaks with the voice of Seshat, goddess of writing, and warns him that he cannot remain apart from the conflicts gathering around him. What begins as a search for knowledge becomes a journey through the divided world to which he belongs.

Within the Musaion, Psa encounters the mysterious Library of the Ulterior. His path leads beyond Alexandria into Upper Egypt and Hermopolis Magna, in pursuit of the Book of Thoth and the legacy of Imhotep. Who was the man later revered as a god? What survives of a people’s wisdom when their histories are written, translated, and contested by others?

Aretalogy: Lineage of a God brings ancient Egypt to life through scholarship, argument, danger, and encounters with the divine. Jack Kausch draws on Egyptian texts and Hermetic traditions to tell a story about memory and belonging, and about the fragile line between a mortal life and an enduring legend.

For readers drawn to historical fiction, Egyptian mythology, the Library of Alexandria, and the origins of Hermetic thought, this is an invitation to follow Psa into a past that refuses to stay buried.
