Dogan Cuceloglu, who might be called "the father of modern psychology in Turkey", was mourned by millions of his readers when he passed away. Born in a small rural village in 1938 as the youngest of 12 children, he lost his mother when he was 10 years old and had a distant relationship with his own father. By the time of his death he had published 21 books, appeared regularly on national TV, had millions of social media followers, and countless parents, students, and teachers in Turkey said his concepts had changed their lives for the better.
He also left a wonderful legacy from his years in the USA during his post-doctoral and teaching work, most importantly including his children and grandchildren.
In what started as a collaboration of essays before Dogan died, his son Timur tells stories from their father-son experiences during Timur’s childhood and university years in California.
From rebuilding a parent-child relationship that was shattered by divorce, to understanding vastly different cultural views, and learning from boyhood mistakes, this book represents an American son’s perspective on his Turkish ‘philosopher father’ who would one day return home to have a profound impact on his native country.
More broadly, “Lessons from a Warrior” is a personal journey of grief and healing from the unexpected death of a parent, as the author completes each chapter (all of which were initially written prior to his father’s passing) with reflections and memories borne from a new awareness of both loss and gratitude.
(Please note the author will donate all proceeds from book sales to environmental and earthquake relief funds in Turkey)
