“The theories that drunkenness, laziness or inefficiency are the causes of poverty are so many devices invented and fostered by those who are selfishly interested in maintaining the present states of affairs, for the purpose of preventing us from discovering the real causes of our present condition.”

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a 1914 novel by Irish writer and house painter Robert Tressell, a pen name for Robert Noonan. It chronicles the efforts of house painter Frank Owen to find work in the fictional town of Mugsborough and is semi-autobiographical and based on his own experiences of exploitation and poverty.
Tressell's masterful novel of class conflict and political awakening endures in its ferocity, biting humour and powerful argument, as a group of working men are shown by a wise newcomer how their labour is abused for the benefit of others.

Synopsis
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists tells the story of a group of working men who are joined one day by Owen, a journeyman-prophet with a vision of a decent society. Owen's passionate critiques of the capitalist system's greed and dishonesty shake his fellow men out of their political slumber. One of the most authentic novels about English working-class life ever written, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a masterwork of wit and political passion.
