Castle Rackrent is a historical novel by Anglo-Irish author Maria Edgeworth, first published in 1800, inspired by The Black Book of Edgeworthstown, a narrative of the author’s own family history.

Set in Ireland, before the 1782 Constitution, this satirical novel relates the tale of four generations of Rackrent heirs and their mismanagement of the family estate, told through the voice of their venerable steward Thady Quirk. By turns humorous, tender and ironic, Castle Rackrent is recognised as being one of the earliest examples of the historical novel.
