An Industrial Fairy Tale by Jay Gunn. A tale of strife, escapism, video games and a demonic monster from the past.
Britain – Winter 1984.
The villagers of a divided and poverty-stricken coal mining community make a pact with a demon offering salvation, so long as they continue to dig the coal. But at what cost?
As the villagers begin to disappear, the teenage son of a missing coal miner and a mysterious girl from the past unearth a terrible secret buried deep beneath the village that threatens to destroy their lives and consume the world.
Coal Face – The Devil in the Smoke is a faustian monster story set against a backdrop of poverty, absent parents and escapism. A morally complex fantasy adventure for young adults and older readers alike.
Parental Guidance: The story contains scenes of underage smoking and the occasional mild swear word and scenes of conflict. I would recommend an age rating of 13+.
About Jay Gunn.
Written and illustrated by Jay Gunn* (Surface Tension, MediEvil - Fate’s Arrow). Jay draws on his personal experiences of social strife from his family’s involvement with the year-long coal miners’ strike of 1984/85. A bitter conflict that divided families and communities with scenes of conflict that resembling that of medieval warfare.
During his teenage years, Jay worked at the National Coal Board in Yorkshire. Part of his work involved going underground into operational coal mines where he would sketch the miners at work and listen to their stories.
It was during those experiences that the idea for a story of a monster that inhabited a coal mine began to form in Jay’s mind.
Jay later escaped the coal face to follow his dream of working in the then burgeoning video game industry.
Jay is most known for his work co-creating the successful and beloved BAFTA award winning MediEvil series of video games for Sony Computer Entertainment.
His first graphic novel, the sci-fi horror eco fantasy series Surface Tension (Titan Comics), received critical plaudits for its story and artwork.
*Jay Gunn is the author nom de plume of Jason Wilson.
