As the world lurches deeper into ecological crisis, it is not enough to keep searching for technological solutions: People need to reconnect with the creatures as sources of theology and spirituality. This book gains its inspiration from the writers of the medieval bestiaries, who followed the tradition of "asking the beasts" and looked for theological and spiritual lessons in the lives and stories of the creatures. It asks, "What would happen if we followed their method and asked the beasts for guidance on the ecological crisis? What would happen if we applied it to some of the creatures that surround us today, such as viruses, jellyfish, and even Schrodinger's cat?" The results are imaginative, surprising, and frequently quite odd. This book will provoke and challenge the reader but may also inspire them to look at creation with new eyes.

Peter Kevern was is Interim Academic Dean at The Queen's Foundation, Birmingham and an Associate Supervisor with Westcott House, Cambridge. He is a theologian by background and training, but for the past few decades his research has been at the interface between religion and social care. His first book for Cascade, Touching God, explored the theological issues raised by dementia and drew heavily on his experience of his mother's dementia. The second book, Asking the Beasts, brings together his early studies in the biological sciences with the insights of the medieval authors of the bestiaries to seek new theological perspectives on the current ecological crisis. In addition to these two books, Peter has co-authored a primer in New Testament Greek, and published nearly 80 papers, reviews and book chapters in the fields of theology and health care.
