When language begins to falter, understanding often follows. The Relationship Companion meets readers in that fragile space—where thought unravels, words strain, and meaning feels just out of reach.
This unique work pairs formally structured poetry with an “Interpretive Companion,” offering a parallel voice that brings clarity without diminishing depth. Each poem stands on its own; each Companion walks beside it—guiding, steadying, and illuminating lived experience.
Centered on Providence, the marriage bond, and cognitive decline, this volume speaks to caregivers, spouses, pastors, and anyone navigating the slow erosion of clarity in themselves or those they love. It does not resolve the tension—it sustains it, holding grief, love, and faith together in a form that reflects the cycles of the mind itself.
Here, poetry is not explained—it is accompanied.
And in that companionship, meaning is not lost, but found again.

D. Brandt's lifelong curiosity began in a Kansas basement lab and first found expression in poetry published in his high school's Non Pareil (1973). He earned a PhD in biochemistry from Kansas State University and spent decades in science before returning to poetry. Redemptions is his first collection. He lives in Lafayette, Indiana, with his wife, Cheryl, and a growing family spread near and far. He runs barefoot and refuses easy answers.
