Synopsis

In the vernacular, the word icon and the adjective iconic imply a singular person or idea. In Orthodox theology however, an icon serves as a visual story illuminating heaven. Iconographers do not create personal interpretations of the subject matter. Rather, they offer windows into what is beyond this world. The highly stylized poses, colors, and perspectives help worshipers transcend their current realities and enter into the realm of heaven. Iconographers recognize that their work aids the faithful in prayer. In 1977, David Giffey, a Wisconsin native and convert to Orthodoxy, traveled to Mt. Athos in Greece to further his studies in traditional Orthodox iconography. Welcomed and encouraged to share his vision in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Madison, WI, David sought to create a living testament to this faith. This book seeks to acknowledge and honor and document this monumental achievement.
