Synopsis

The Death of an external examiner is a detective story of sorts, a murder mystery, with some humorous asides, set in a university in the year 1983 – pre computer and mobile phone. It is a kind of cross between David Lodge, Malcolm Bradbury and Amanda Cross. The central character is Staverley, a young lecturer, who for personal reasons, sets out to solve the crime, the murder of a domineering and much despised professor, using his social science research skills. By getting people to talk about themselves and their lives Staverley uncovers a set of complicated personal histories, hidden motives and lies and he becomes increasingly burdened by and changed by all of this. The more he knows the more unsure of himself and less certain of what is right he becomes. As he solves the crime he must make some difficult decisions and live with them. The book interweaves the practicalities of academic life and its inter-personal rivalries with social class, politics, revenge and moral dilemmas.
