Synopsis

My first book, titled “Paradise” tells of our journey from Brighton, England, to a new life in the mountains of Portugal, and how
fate led us to Paradise…a derelict, dirt floored ruin on the banks
of a crystal clear Portuguese mountain river. Along with me on
the journey were Steve, my wonderful resourceful husband, Craig,
our nine year old son, our dog Toby, a 7 year old Labrador type
mongrel and our three horses. We were enchanted at first sight by
the stunning location of the ruin. It was surrounded by trees, and
so quiet apart from the birds singing and the burble of the river. But the ruin had no electricity, running water, or telephone
connection. There were no services at all. It was to be the biggest
challenge of our lives, we were stepping back 100 years time, living with candle and gas lighting, and carrying water up from our
mountain spring.
It’s been an amazing experience to breathe life back into the crumbling walls of our ruin. Steve and I are both proud to have done it,
and in fact we are still doing it to this day!
Another big part of my story is horses; they have always been
my passion. We brought our three horses from England with us
and started offering horse riding holidays. This added a whole
different adventure to our lives, and within a year, we had seven horses, three dogs, three cats, and three chickens. Over the
next few years, two beautiful foals were born at our farm; all of
viii
these animals have enriched our lives and have etched their own
characters into our story.
Our son Craig was only nine years old at the time, we were
amazed at the way he overcame some huge obstacles; like starting
at a Portuguese school, where nobody spoke English. We have had
some great adventures, and some tough times, but I have loved
every minute of it.
I hope you enjoy sharing our ongoing story in my second book titled “Another Slice of Paradise.” This takes in the next 12 years of
our life in Portugal, from the end of 1999 to 2012. Many guests visit
our little corner of Paradise to ride our horses and see for themselves the stunning beauty of the Portuguese countryside. You will
meet new people, horses, dogs, and fowl, as well as catching up
with the older animals, and hopefully learning a little more about
Portugal and its wonderful friendly people. Our dream to build a
lovely little guest cottage becomes a reality, and a surprise encounter leads to us building our own riding arena.
Our life seems to be a rollercoaster of happiness and heartbreak, but our old house and the river below are our constant.
