Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Zimbabwe in March 2020, the government of Zimbabwe decreed a national lockdown at a time when the Zimbabwean economy was already in the doldrums and the health sector was broken. The consequences were far reaching for the ordinary people. What started as a health crisis soon became a governance and human rights crisis. In the middle of this crisis, Mandela Washington Fellows from a cross section of the Zimbabwean society came together to connect their skills and find ways to lead in times of crisis. This publication is a compilation of the experiences of various emerging leaders in their response to COVID 19. These experiences bring to the fore the reality of leadership with compassion, hence its title. As we tell these stories, we help shape and inspire organic citizen leadership. We embrace Nelson Mandela’s philosophy that leadership is not positional. It is behavioural. In telling these stories, we affirm that every single person has a responsibility to lead with compassion.
