I Wonder What It’s Like When Your Parent Has Cancer: Max's Story is a gentle, supportive children’s book created to help families talk honestly about cancer—and the big feelings that can come with it.
The first book in the Wonders & Worries Children’s Book Series, this story follows a young boy named Max as he learns about and copes with his dad’s cancer diagnosis. As Max begins to understand what cancer means for his family, he explores common questions, worries, and emotions children often experience when a parent is seriously ill.
Throughout the book, age-appropriate language and compassionate storytelling help normalize feelings such as fear, sadness, confusion, and uncertainty. Challenging moments in the story are supported with built-in “helpers” and practical coping ideas that encourage emotional expression, healthy communication, and resilience. Strategies for sharing information with Max and his sister about cancer are woven throughout the narrative, offering guidance for parents, caregivers, and professionals supporting children through a parent’s diagnosis.
Aimed at families with children ages 4-10, this book was created by Wonders & Worries, a national nonprofit organization with more than 25 years of experience supporting children and families coping with a parent’s serious illness, injury, or loss. Drawing from evidence-informed practices used by child life specialists and mental health professionals, I Wonder What It’s Like When Your Parent Has Cancer: Max's Story is designed to be read together—opening the door to meaningful conversations and connection during an incredibly difficult time.
