Tam, his sister Marrea and their childhood friend Nehlo are members of the Counselors, with the power to guide people’s thoughts. They are also able to harness the energy in the air around them as a shield and weapon and to propel their movements, making them unpredictable and fearsome warriors. The rules of the Counselors mandate that their power is used only to serve and guide, never to direct. Under this facade though, they hide a secret that could undermine everything they do.
Nehlo, through loss and prejudice, has grown bitter over the constraints to his ambition. He has perverted his power and used it to subdue the people of Elishadra, turning communities against themselves and breeding distrust and fear. As he has grown in power, he has become more callous and utterly rejected his past beliefs and allegiances. He now maintains his authority through a network of people who willingly allowed themselves to be enslaved to him through being bonded, in exchange for a share of his power. They govern Elishadra with impunity, crushing any resistance.
Tam and Marrea believe in a creator God, who gave them their power, and to whom, ultimately, they are accountable for how they wield it. This, and their fractured friendship with Nehlo, drives their desire to offer him a second chance but also to free Elishadra from his grip. They cannot achieve this through conflict alone, but the alternative may be too much for them to bear and may ruin any hope of success or peace.
