Synopsis

A love story of two artists, and the ultimate death of one of them, told with the humor and poetry that sustained them throughout Varya's struggles with chemical sensitivities and Roy's addictions to alcohol and nicotine. Varya tries in vain to share her spirituality with atheist Roy until, in the last days of his life, in a startling role reversal, he becomes her spiritual teacher.
As the cancer progressed, Roy's kidneys started to fail. I assumed we
would resume the herbs his oriental physician had used to stabilize Roy's
kidneys in the past. But this time the patient resisted. "You have to let go,
Varya. Even after I am dust in an urn, you will try to rehydrate me by
pouring water on my ashes." I replied, "Then in my own Little Shop of
Horrors, I can just feed you, and Roy II can continue to terrorize the
world!" With his usual disdain for his sick body, Roy quipped, "Just put
me in the trash inside a hefty bag." But instead he sensibly chose
cremation at the first company listed in the phone book, ABC Funeral Home
and Cremation--abbreviation for 'Any Body Cremated," I joked.
When she studied meditation in India Varya had learned that love
is even greater than the gods. As Roy is dying, she expresses what is most
important to her:
In my lifetime, I will learn
Only the palette of my heart,
And calibrate its colors
With the colors of my counterpart.
