But that goodwill is almost exhausted, morale is at rock-bottom and staff are leaving the NHS in droves, often reluctantly, for better paid and less stressful, though less rewarding, jobs.

Peter McLardy-Smith, a consultant in the NHS, with forty years' experience, has written this book to discuss some of the many practices in the NHS that are stupid, inefficient, venal or even dangerous and to suggest changes to them and to the whole structure and ethos of the NHS and its relationship with the Community.

The ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020 has made the public aware of the stressful nature of working in the health care “frontline”, changing the previous attitude of indifference, or even petulant resentment, to one of gratitude. That may last, but it is unlikely. Through 2021 the frustrations of waiting times have been heightened by the shift in clinical priorities consequent upon the pandemic dramas. In any case, gratitude does not pay the rent. There are many parts of the country where people simply cannot afford to live working on a nurse or therapist’s salary.

The author focuses on Inept politicians of all Parties as they vie with each other as to who will promise the most money to pour into the black hole which the NHS has now become. Yet there are people, from individuals to institutions and corporations, who make vast sums of money out of health care, almost invariably at the expense of the NHS. These financial injustices must be reversed. This book is a challenge to lazy thinking and a call to arms to save the NHS.

If the NHS is to survive. All these financial problems and many cultural ones must be properly, sometimes radically, addressed, not just papered over as happens at present. The NHS has become like an evil charity, always in need of more money; but a tiny proportion of the money received actually benefits the community which it purports to serve.

By writing this seminal book, Peter McLardy-Smith has ensured that the debate about the NHS will be better informed, based on real experience and with his call to arms, changed for the good of all.
