Synopsis

The journey began for the Busby Babes in the European Cup on 11th September 1956, flying to Belgium taking on RSC Anderlecht in the first qualifying round. It all ended on 14th May 1958, as a Manchester United team ravaged by the Munich Air Disaster were beaten by AC Milan at the San Siro, in the second-leg of a European Cup semi-final. In between, before disaster struck in southern Germany, life at Manchester United was described as ‘‘Paradise’’ by Sir Bobby Charlton. ‘‘A bunch of bouncing Busby Babes’’ that enthralled and enchanted all who watched them perform. Ignoring threats of heavy fines by the head of the Football League Alan Hardaker, Matt Busby took his young team into Europe to take on the best around. There for two seasons they would be involved in some magnificent encounters! The formidable Basques of Athletic Bilbao, beaten 3-0 on a never to be forgotten Mancunian night, after losing 5-3 away. Then, enter stage right, ripped off the Pathe news screen reels. The wizards and magicians of Real Madrid themselves. Brought to life as the reds drew Di Stefano, Gento, Kopa, et al, in the 1957 European Cup semi-final. Come the following year, 1958. A journey to Play Red Star Belgrade in Yugoslavia behind the Iron Curtain. A monumental battle in the Balkans that the Babes ultimately won, but then came Munich. A dark veil, so many dead. Eight young footballers who lost their lives amongst twenty-three in all. Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor, Eddie Colman, Liam ‘‘Billy’’ Whelan, and the incomparable Duncan Edwards. Step forward Jimmy Murphy, who by sheer, raging heart and courage kept the red flag flying in the immediate aftermath. Paradise tells the story of those years. The games, the characters, the heroes and the villains. From the joys of a gang of young footballers having the time of their lives, to the horror of the blood in the snow. From Paradise to Paradise lost, then ten years later for one night only in 1968, when Sir Bobby lifted the European Cup high at Wembley Stadium. Paradise found once more.
