Synopsis

Astronomer Sckcksoub, with the help of her colleagues, endeavors mightily to pin down the precise date of the supernova of a massive star a few lightyears from her planet, and to persuade her continent's government to take the necessary steps to protect the populace from the intense ultraviolet and x-ray radiation that will bathe the surface of their planet. She must enlist the support of bureaucrats and media moguls, however unnatural (to her) their thought processes might be. Her intense efforts succeed, but can her species survive the long years underground? Can they remain sane? Will the surviving citizens be able to rebuild their society, when the hard radiation abates? How will Sckcksoub occupy her time, when only the collapsed core of the offending star remains?
