The authoritative 12 Step Programme published in 1953 by the inspired founders of Alcoholics Anonymous is a guide to help victims address and respond to their condition. It has been adopted and adapted in many ways since to address all forms of addiction and many other debilitating psychological and health related conditions.
“I cannot understand my own actions. For I do not do the good that I want, but the evil that I do not want, that is what I do…” … Romans 7 v 15-17
St Paul here both acknowledges his weakness but also tries to understand why this may be and realises that he like you and I are all human and, as such, are all flawed.
Addictions, depression, anxiety and anger outbursts are all manifestations of the way that we as humans respond to the ups and downs of day to day life in a world which, let’s admit, is getting increasingly difficult to live peacefully in.
Whether it be music, various programmes to recalibrate thinking and behaving, or guidance from Scripture, we all from time to time need to acknowledge where we are at, recognise and accept our weaknesses and, attempt to redress imbalances that we may find.
This reinterpretation of the 12 Step programme is simply offered as a way of asking you to consider the wisdom in the letters written by the hand and heart of St Paul as he wrestles with his own weakness and guides his readers to a different way of being in this earthly life.
The book is also written based upon the privilege of having served 12 years in Prison Chaplaincy, 12 years which gave an insight into the 12 Step and other recovery programmes and their potential to offer lifelines to people; 12 years where the sharing of various passages from St Paul with prisoners seemed to help bring about some transformations; 12 years which sadly saw people still in denial, or so broken by their addiction and life that the hope which flickered within was snuffed out by their own weakness or, often the darkness of others.
