A poem is a foreign country, and poetry in an unfamiliar language can seem completely inaccessible. In this unusual book, Daphne Loads travels to the worlds of 11 poems in 10 languages. Her discoveries are quirky, sometimes funny and occasionally profound.
In the spring of 2020, the author retired from her university role and was immediately sent into lockdown because of Coronavirus. She had time to read and write and to think as she trundled her tricycle around the lanes near her home. She realised that she was in contact with a number of interesting people who spoke an intriguing array of languages. She decided to invite each of them to introduce her to a short poem or extract in their mother tongue. As she read and reflected on their chosen pieces, she made connections with her own life and explored her experiences of travel and learning languages.
This is a book about being a foreigner, reading, noticing, missing, mistaking and misunderstanding. It is also an invitation to you, the reader, to make and record your own connections.
