Synopsis

This riveting story was inspired by true events and is based upon the life and experiences of Bernadette Soubirous, a simple and humble French peasant girl who claimed to have seen an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary some eighteen times at the Massabielle Grotto, Lourdes in France. Her declarations eventually reached the ears of the Catholic Church hierarchy and shook it to its foundations to such an extent that an investigation was ordered into her claims by Pope Pious the Ninth himself. Bernadette never wavered from her story or her beliefs, despite being mocked and ridiculed by sceptics. She was eventually sent away from her family by the Church to the ‘Sisters of Charity and Christian Instruction of Nevers’ Convent, remaining there until the day she died, in 1871, Bernadette always claimed that she had seen ‘The Visions’ and insisted that she had spoken nothing but the truth. The Beatification of Bernadette took place in Rome on the 14th of June 1925 and her Canonization on the 8th of December 1933.
