The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Or Gustavus Vassa, The African, first published in 1789 in London is the autobiography of Olaudah Equiano. The narrative encompasses such literary themes as a slavery narrative, a travel narrative, and a spiritual narrative. The book describes Equiano's time spent in enslavement and documents his attempts at becoming an independent man through his study of the Bible and his eventual success in gaining his own freedom and in business thereafter. The enduring appeal and legacy of this particular slave narrative are that the author lived at a time when precious few slaves who endured what he did survived to tell their story and were literate enough to tell it dramatically.

From the introduction by Robert Reid-Pharr this autobiography “is a strikingly beautiful monument to the startling combination of skill, cunning, and plain good luck that allowed him to win his freedom, write his story, and gain international prominence.” After Equiano gained his freedom he became a prominent antislavery advocate in Britain.
