Jason Cheever, 28, lives in the aftermath of the pandemic when the economy is still reeling. He gets laid off from his job, and bizarrely manages to break his finger later the same day.
These are the practical problems. But other cognitive issues are returning – things which he thought he’d defeated in the past. He had many incidents of sleepwalking in childhood. And now as a man, he finds himself waking up on the street, at night, with no clue how he got there. His auditory hallucinations are making a comeback too. They’re getting worse. Far spookier. Why are they reappearing at this point in his life?
Jason’s an artist; or at least tries to be. When he gets troubled he tends to churn out the drawings and paintings. This autumn his methods are turning increasingly erratic, to the point where he can’t be sure whether his creativity is in any way healthy.
Fox and the Birch Trees is a stream of consciousness novel which explores paranoia, self-destruction and a slow loss of reality within an artistic mind.
