Life after active-duty service is a far cry different than what you experience now. The intent of this book is to help you learn from my mistakes and my successes. If you decide you’re a “one and done” Marine, you need to begin to look far enough ahead to avoid the harsh realities that await you. And if you plan on competing with Archibald Henderson for the record of years of service, you should still keep your options available.
I actually had planned to get out almost immediately after I reenlisted. But I was so caught up in the “here and now” of life in the Corps that I neglected to plan far enough ahead. And this was despite many people warning me about failing to plan.
So, I paid the price. And that price was high. Now in my 50s, I am no closer to retirement than I was as a young Sergeant 30 years prior. My advice to you? Buy this book. Read this book. Then, apply what you learn both within this book and in your own life and circumstances so that you set yourself up for success for the rest of your days.
